What is Disaster Recovery?
"Disaster recovery is the process, policies and procedures related to preparing for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure critical to an organization after a natural or human-induced disaster. Disaster recovery is a subset of business continuity. While business continuity involves planning for keeping all aspects of a business functioning in the midst of disruptive events, disaster recovery focuses on the IT or technology systems that support business functions." ~ Credit Wikipedia

Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) is a critical component of Business Continuity and most businesses will never need to implement it. Are the risks manageable - Possibly. Could my business survive without a Disaster Recovery Plan - Good question!

What is the cost of DRP?
The first DRP requires the most effort as key processes are identified and documented. Ongoing DRP's are less time consuming. Large companies are estimated to spend between 2 and 4 percent of their IT budget on DRP. Smaller companies can plan much quicker and costs as a result are less.

What is a Disaster?
There are two basic categorlies of disasters - natural and man made. Natural disasters are typically wind, water, fire and earthquake related. Man made include chemical or hazardous material spills, bio-terrorism, war and infrastructure failure.
